URGENT Chrome Update scam

[ Edited ]

Has anyone else received this popup?  I knew not to download the update, but am now trying to find out if it is indicative of being infected with a virus or malware.

Is anyone experienced with this one?

Edited to correct an error.  I wish they were as easy to spot as they are after I click "Post."  Woman Frustrated

Yes, I get one that says the Sim card in my phone is going to be disabled.  The giveaway is, I'm not on a phone, I'm on a Samsung pad.  I just ignore it.

Re: URGENT Chrome Update scam

I have not seen the pop up update for Chrome. I just searched it online & yes there is a Chrome Update Virus going around that would have to be removed if you install it. You could run Malwarebytes to see if anything shows up on the scan. If you did not download it I would think you are ok.

I've not seen this, that's scary!!  I don't download things that pop up, if I want to download, I'll find it.

@Nightowlz  Thank you.  I use my computer primarily for finances and recipes (Woman LOL), so tend to be ****** about preventing viruses and such.  Even though I didn't download it, I confess that after that pop up, I scanned via Malwarebytes, SpyBot and Chrome Cleanup. Woman Embarassed  All clear, BTW.

@IamMrsG You should be ok. I just ignore all those pop ups. If we need to update something we direct to their site. I know DH uses File Hippo a lot.

Re: URGENT Chrome Update scam

Thanks.  I didn't know about this.  But I have learned over the years to never update something from a pop up.  I open the program itself, go into the 'settings' area where it has a 'check for updates' and do it from there.

I guess they never tire of coming up with new ways to skrew people over, eh?  Smiley Sad

I routinely check Chrome for updates by clicking on those three lines (upper right corner), click on that.  Go down to 'Help' and click on 'About Google Chrome'.  This will open up a window that checks for updates and you just follow through.  It usually just takes seconds.

There has also been this type of scam for Adobe.  If I see anything that says Adobe needs updating, except on my Secunia PSI or Windows Updates, I close it and go right to the adobe site and install current version from there.

I've been getting this thing the last 2 weeks or so.  It is annoying beyond belief.  For awhile, I was getting an Adobe flash player update popup.

Re: URGENT Chrome Update scam

I often see a narrow strip across the top on my other account.  I haven't clicked onto the Chrome strip popup because I really don't know anything about what it is.  I think it said Chrome+ or something similar.  I'll have to pay more attention to it next time, and post the exact words on the strip.

'More or less', 'Right or wrong', 'In general', and 'Just thinking out loud ' (as usual).
