My e-mail address has been sold to scammers and I get spam e-mail daily.  Unfortunately, they are now coming with trojans which were removed and block by Bitdefender.  All I did was single click on the e-mail to highlight it and the trojan was trying to install.  So, yes you can get malware without fully openiing the e-mail.  Beware.

It's my main e-mail address.  I have others but, I would have to go to every site and account which has this one as my contact and change my e-mail address then cancel the account.  I may have to do this if it continues.

@gadgetgal613,

I'm so sorry you've experienced so many problems.
It's extremely rare these days for the simple act of opening a message to automatically download data, but there can be that rare occasion.

(I remember an older thread last year discussing this, I believe it was in Community Chat.)

Most email accounts have settings allowing us to create strong

filters to automatically funnel questionable mail directly into a

spam or junk folder, and also to avoid automatically displaying

remote links or images that could cause problems...  that sort of thing.

Have you reviewed the available settings for your email account?

It's frustrating and upsetting to encounter this kind of problem, for sure.   Sending good wishes your way.🌻

It has a junk filter option but, you have to at least highlight the e-mail then block the contact and send to junk.  That is what I was trying to do.  I'm using the mail program witch comes with Apple and don't know if there are any other settings.  I'd hate to block everything but those in my contact list because, I do get mail from people or businesses who are not in contacts.
