Transferring data from one computer to the next?

Our HP is 6 yrs. old and the screen comes up and then after a couple of minutes it goes dim so dim you can't see anything but not black. We took it to a repairman and he would charge $200. Beings it's already 6 yrs. old i went ahead and bought the TSV HP with 8 gb and 1 tb. E 224555. Now my question is do I have to take it to a computer repairman to transfer the data from my old one to the new one or is there another way I can do myself? The repairman will charge another $75 to do the transfer. Thanks for your time Tucker
