Re: Tracfone worked during IRMA

@Zhills  I am confused about the shape you mention.  Do you mean

"comma" shape?

Yes, Your phone will work in a hurricane because they operate off of satellites way, way up in the sky, all over the nation.  That is the way that they work.  Smiley Happy  It is the way all wireless phones work.

@terriebear  Cell phones work off of local towers, not satellites.  I used to have T-Mobile, and my phone often went dead during a power outage that also involved the local tower.

Re: Tracfone worked during IRMA

I had to switch from WiFi to Mobile Data to get the live feed on TV.

That's correct, @2blonde.   Several of us mentioned that.   I think people are accustomed to the way GPS devices use satellite data and, probably naturally, also think satellites are used for cell phones.    Unfortunately, when land-based problems happen (like earthquakes, hurricanes, etc.) and damage land-based cell towers, we find ourselves without signals for our mobile phones.

@Zhills,  The router for a WiFi signal needs a reliable connection to your  provider and also must have (obviously) a solid power-source connection to operate properly.   In the aftermath of storms, often one (or both) of those fail -- sounds like that's what happened in your case.   I'm so thankful you're safe and sound.❤️
