Our current modem is not working right and they want to replace it with a modem that will eliminate our router. Is this safe? Won't they have access to our WIFI and computer/tablets?

When ever you switch equipment, you need to make sure the WiFi is secure.  Most equipment today have the router name and security number set per default.   The name of the router and security number will be different so you'll need to reconnect all of your devices. It's not difficult to do.

If you don't want to do that and know the name and security number of your old router, you can rename the new router combo to the name of your old one so the devices don't need to be reconnected.  That's what I've done with the last 2 new routers I've purchased and it works like a charm.

I agree with you

@Nataliesgramma even though you say you are not tech savvy you should learn to change things like the routers name and password for your own safety.  Not hard to do.

don't use use your name either :-).

my last 2 routers have come with completely random names which I left, but changed the password when I needed to.

Our router right now is separate from the Time Warner modem and we set up the wifi, secured with a password. My concern is the new modem from Time Warner has a router bulit IN their modem. Since they were able to 'test' the present modem that I have (from wherever they were) and tell me that it isn't working properly, I am wondering what they will have access to with this new one .

I guess my question is......even when I secure things on my end with a password, will they (Time Warner) be able to also access it on their end .....since it is their equipment. Of coarse they said it is safe...they are trying to get me to get it installed...

Is it safer to use my own router?

I am with TWC and got a new modem recently. I changed my land line phone from Verizon to bundle with TWC. The  guy that installed it put in my network name. I have had no problem with.

What are you afraid of?  Do you think the techs are going to spy and steal information?

I don't remember if I had to tell the tech my password. I was assured no one else could jump on my network because it is password protected. I haven't had a problem. As for TWC having access to your equipment they do. They always try to fix things on their end before sending someone out to your home. Anyone "spying" on me would be very disappointed, I do boring things!
