Re: Thinking About A New Computer

If you do have an Apple store near you, it's really helpful to go in there and talk to them. They're so helpful. They completely set up my computer for me before I left the store.

Re: Thinking About A New Computer

Is the extra cost of the Mac laptop worth it if you just want it for doing stuff like this?, I have iPHone/pad which I love. I thought about getting a Apple laptop next time but not really sure that the extra money is worth the investment.

My daughter who has one is thinking of getting just a basic Windows laptop when her Apple goes, she used it for college and grad school. So that need isn't there anymore.

Just throwing it out there

Hi nutmeg,

I don't think that Apple does, through Best Buy. I think that you may have to go through the Geek Squad at Best Buy, to ask for any technical help. I could be wrong, though.

However, we have found that their sales staff will help you if you do have any questions regarding the computer products that they sell.

I can't get over how many posters assumes everyone has an Apple store nearby. If you don't live near a big city, you're SOL. There is no reason why you can't buy an Apple computer at Best Buy. If you want Apple Care, contact the company and buy it.

I believe the OP lives in NYC. There probably is a store near her. I can get to a store in about an hour. Does BB offer classes on using an Apple?

No. Are you saying only people who have an Apple store within driving distance should buy an Apple computer?

If you are blessed to have an Apple store in your area, why not shop for a computer in a store?

Blessed? Having a religious experience while shopping? The poster I'm talking about doesn't have an Apple store close by. In fact, there are millions of people who don't have an Apple store close by. You can buy at Best Buy, the Apple Store or online and you'll get the same computer. BTW, Apple Care and classes are NOT free if you buy your computer at the Apple store.

Taking classes would be a great thing to do. In fact, I think everyone who buys a new computer should take classes. But, there are other ways to learn. I bought an iPad app and used it to help me make the transition and it helped. I'm one of those people who knows/knew Windows really well and liked having a lot of control over how my computer was set up. Apple doesn't let you do that.

Re: Thinking About A New Computer

If you google "compare Apple...... To Apple........." You will go to a chart that actually compares one Mac/Apple device to another. VERY HELPFUL as a study guide before purchasing. Also, Apple is constantly including virus protection in its OS updates, but there will always be attempts to violate computer security on all cyber devices. You have to be a little or very wary no matter what equipment no matter what you're using. glb, some of the courses at my Apple store are free, and some are not. To the best of my personal knowledge, Apple Care is always a for pay add on.

I have a Dell computer in my office ..... and Apple laptops at home. IMHO there is no comparison. The Apple products are superior pieces of equipment and more user friendly.

I'd wait until Windows 10 comes out. If you Google "Windows 10" - it isn't a rumor. It is supposed to be more like Windows 7 and go back to the original start menu that many people miss.

As far as a pc running slow....make sure you have a decent anti-virus and maleware protection, de-fragment your hard drive, clean your cookies out once a month or so if not more often and get rid of stuff on your pc you don't need anymore.

I still have a Dell laptop with Windows Vista. I do all of the above, do have high speed internet access as well. It's as fast as when I first got it. Even faster it seems because internet speeds have gone up from 2008-2009 when I got my pc.

Re: Thinking About A New Computer

I was in Best Buy this morning and looked at the MacBooks. No sales person even came over to me to help me. I must have looked like I wasn't buying! I saw the 11" and 13" books and can't believe how small the screens were. The one I had my eye on was the 15" with retina display. It was about $2,000! I'm not willing to spend that much.
