What I did is I went to bestbuy.com and looked at the various pc's and features so when I walked into the store I pretty much knew what I wanted

@gardenman I've ordered most everything online for way too many years. But back when shopping in an electronics store (or even a department store) was what was available (I never did llke shopping from catalogs for some reason), it wasn't particularly hard to be smarter than the sales people out on the floor. They pretty much only knew what their managers had "taught" them. Which, as you said, is aimed at selling what they want to sell.
First TV I bought was a 12-in color Sony that I bought in a department store. Paid $400, which was a lot in the mid 70's. But it was the "home" version of the monitors we used at work and was manufactured in Sony's San Diego plant (if I remember correctly). Salesman had an easy commission since I already knew what I wanted when I went in to purchase it.
