We have ATT, and DH wants to go with Spectrum, it is cheaper, and faster internet. My question is: I have my list of movies that I have recorded to watch at a later date, and also my favorites that rarely play,a lot of Doris Day movies, Under the Tuscan Sun, Steel Magnolias, etc. When we move to Specturm, they disconnect the  box, and poof, there go all of my movies. Does anyone know of a way to copy these to another medium, or any other way to save them? To me, this is the worst part of changing providers. Thanks.

Just my guess. To copy you have to have a Video Output on the device, unless someone knows of a way to transfer them wirelessly.

Then, another one of my guesses. Each company more than likely has their devices encoded so playback on any device but their's would not work.

I have a 2tb hard drive with over half of that space used with programs I saved from their Hopper 3 hard drive. Now if I were to drop Dish Network, I would be very surprised of any of that saved material could be watched, say on my computer or other type of playback device. Dish Network would more than likely be encoded, therefore playable only through a Dish Network Authorized Device.

Maybe @gardenman knows more accurately about these things, and he will see this.

Re: TV list on ATT or Spectrum

My son has a 4 TB external harddrive and we wanted to get a new Directv box for him. We were informed that he would lose all the recordings.  After a program is recorded, it is codded to the DVR box.  That is so it can not be coppied.  I can see their point in doing this.  People can't sell what they have recorded.  Hope this helps.

@nanny24 - If it's any consolation, you'll probably find these movies available on Spectrum, too.  It likely depends on what level of programming you're going for.

We switched from DirecTV to Spectrum about two months ago.  We had a lot of things recorded on the Genie and we made sure to watch them before we switched.  (Previous to that, our Genie failed once and we lost everything!)

We were thrilled to switch to Spectrum, because we live in a rural area and we had lousy internet with Consolidated (think 2.5 mbps; 3, if we were lucky and the signal kept dropping).  We paid separately for DirecTV and our two combined bills were around $275 a month.

We were able finally to get Spectrum to run the co-axial cabling to our house at no cost to us and we're now paying $100 less a month for combined phone/internet/tv.  (It also includes two DVRs; they do work differently from DirecTV though.  Independent of each other, so what you record on one, you can't watch on the other.)

One of the things the technician pointed out before he left was that there were "tons of movies" that you could watch free on demand "if you get bored" with the regular programming.

We're very pleased we switched.  (Oh, our internet speed is now 117 mbps!)

The simple answer is no, you can't record them onto a different device.  It's to prevent piracy or illegal recording.  You should be able to find the movies you like to purchase elswhere.

@nanny24

I read somewhere the other day AT&T is getting out of the DSL or phone internet business.

My sister has Spectrum cable TV,  internet and phone service. She has a package with an internet speed of 200 Mbps.
