@Gokat, I hope my frustration isn't frustrating you! Sorry for any miscommunication, but if you look at my post #17, I was able to download KB3185911 from the Microsoft Download Center. The problem a couple of hours ago when I downloaded it was .... when I double-clicked the download, nothing happened, so I didn't know how to install.
I went back to Woody's site and my aggravation was when I clicked on "two-step process" in the first article, it took me to a second article that I had to lumber through to get to the instructions. For a computer nincompoop like myself, I need to get to the instructions immediately and directly -- Here is Step 1, Here is Step 2, lol. Don't get me wrong.... I appreciate Woody's help. What would we do without people like him.... and you, and others here?
Anyhow, Woody's instructions included a step I did not know about -- that is, turning off Windows Update service in the Control Panel after downloading and before installation of the update.
Then, after restarting my computer, my Windows Updates toolbar icon informed me that "Updates are available" and when I viewed the list, KB3185911 was still there, so I decided I better download it and include the step of turning off my Windows Update service (as per Woody's instructions).
So...... (*taking a deep breath*) .... KB3185911 is now successfully installed, twice. I went to my Install List to uninstall one of them, but could not find either KB3185911 (9/17/16) install on that list.... even though both installs do appear on my "View Update List" as being installed today. Is it a problem to have KB3185911 installed twice? If not a problem, I'll just leave them there.
Also... now what do I do with the 13 other updates that are available to install? Is it safe to install those now?
Can you see how someone like me can eventually get something accomplished, but not without a ton of questions, issues, and time and energy?
i'm sorry for the trouble.... :-(
P.S. I understood there were a couple of ways to go with this (including Factory Restore) and that you were telling me I didn't need to do a Factory Restore. I only wanted to ask @glb613 questions about Factory Restore for future reference or as a last resort. :-)

Not the least frustrated here, @SaRina , as I understand how complicated these things can be, especially the first time. The only problem I have is I know I could do this for you in minutes...if that were possible. Sometimes I just want to climb through users' screens and DO IT!!![]()
Don't concern yourself with a potential duplicate download as Windows will clear it when it runs the Disk Cleanup utility. I assume you have that set to run automatically on a schedule.
If Kxxx5911 is showing "Installed" in your "Update List and Update History", you can now install all your other updates without a problem. Tada!! HTH"s
Having posted to you and read many of your posts, I had no doubt you'd make your way through successfully. "Woodyland" is now available to you in the future before installing updates so you can intercede before installing them. BTW October is looking to be a doozy as MS is toying with the update process again. Just so you can be aware.![]()
PS... Factory Restore (especially the first time) is not something to be taken lightly. One needs to be fully prepared with good backups and all the information you'll need to supply to get up and running again, as well as time and patience.
That said, the particular problem with windows updates that we've been working with would only reappear when the updates are reloaded after your Factory Restore so your many hours of work would be for naught (with regard to the update problem).
I saw your question re: how to find the updates once you've Factory Restored. They would start downloading as soon as you leave your computer idle long enough for MS to detect that your computer needs updating. HTH's

Great news! All updates successfully installed and computer running well!
As always, I can't thank all of you enough for the help!
The next batch of updates that become available, I will check Woody's site to see if if a correction is needed.
I'm so angry at Microsoft for all of this.... I feel like calling them up and telling them their antics will not spur me to dump my Win7 for Win10 -- what it will surely do is spur me to get a non-Microsoft computer. grrrr

So... like where do you live? It might be worth the trip for me next time, lol.

Yes, @SaRina , MS can stop this any ole time they want and it'll be just fine with me, too!!
I'm in Western NY here. From the very first time I heard "Beam me up,Scottie!" I've wondered where this technology is for US!![]()
Happy to hear all's back to normal (and there's lots of weekend still left!)
Enjoy!

The other day I had an update on my Win10 computer and it just stayed stuck on 50% downloaded for two days. It was never going anywhere.
At least it was only one update. With Win10, there is no way to just stop it and re-check to try and get it to re-set.
So, I Googled the problem and got lucky. There was a 'fix' for it and I was able to get the stupid update installed and be done with it.
I hate that they are giving us less and less control over these things.

Microsoft wants to let customers know who is in charge.

@ceekay wrote:So reading through all this, it appears you are still able to get all the updates to Windows 7 if you restore to factory defaults? I have been considering restoring because my laptop (3 years old) is dog slow. I had extra RAM added when I bought it but somehow I do not think the data is partitioned correctly, I keep getting warnings about high CPU usage. I have a vintage Click Free that worked when I moved from my Windows XP desk top to this Windows 7 laptop. I have been wondering if I need to get a different external hard drive if I plan to move to Windows 10 someday (worried the Click Free is too old to work on the newer OS). I am partially tech savvy about certain things but restoring a computer to factory defaults is not one of them. You guys are making it sound less scary.
You may want to find a new portable hard drive at Amazon. I also buy a simple basic storage case sold by Amazon.
WD 1TB black my passport ultra portable external hard drive - usb 3.0- wdbgpu001bbk-nesn
I keep getting warnings about high CPU usage. I noticed Windows XP and Windows 7 as it ages. Does not run as well.

@Nuttmeg - Thanks for the hard drive recommendation. As soon as things slow down at work I am going to try to get my home electronics squared away. I always appreciate the advice and observations you provide.
