Specs for new computer

I'm about to buy a new computer for home use for two adults ... no gaming. Just standard internet browsing, pictures, word documents, spreadsheets, music. What spec should I look for in terms of memory,speed etc?

I am thinking am thinking desktop this time instead of laptop since I have a netbook. What say you about HP? I heard something about them getting out of the computer business ... is that true? Will someone buy them and honor their warranties etc?

Are the desktops now more expensive than laptops?

Your advice is great appreciated.
