Re: Sleep, hibernate, turn off hard disk?

I have my imac set to put hard drives to sleep when possible, my display to sleep after 15 minutes and my computer to sleep after an hour. I don't even reboot once a week.

Re: Sleep, hibernate, turn off hard disk?

Not as someone "tech savvy" but an IT professional the idea it is harmful to turn your computer on and off is a myth. 30 or so years ago there were hard drives that had to be "parked" before you could power off. In fact leaving you computer on all the time is a real problem, not necessarily certain failure but in the overall life of the computer. As the hardware gets smaller and more powerful it generates more heat and heat is the component's worst enemy. It is why sleep mode is so important is you are leaving a PC on. The computer will spin a hard drive up and down as it needs it so a sleep mode for the drive is not necessary. Windows can have problems waiting for a sleeping drive to wake up too.
