Skype vs Messages

My friend and I have iPads and she also has an iPhone. We Skype each other all the time. We are trying to learn more about the iPads. We're trying to figure out Messages. Why or when would you use message instead of Skype? The only time I can think of is if you are in a movie theater or something like that? We are older and not fast at typing on the screen. Do kids mainly use Messages?
