Hubby and I like to listen to books in the car, especially on long trips.
We have been listening to a series and some of the discs are the entire book on 1 disc and some are the entire book on 10 or more disc's.
We are wondering why this is? If they can get an entire book on 1 disc and charge a lot less, then why are some still on the multi disc's? Has technology just come up with the 1 disc books recently and not all have been recorded on 1 disc?

Older technology maybe. It used to be that ALL audiobooks were on multiple CDs.
(Do you have a smart phone? You can download/borrow audiobooks for free using a public library app called Libby.)

@Imaoldhippie I don't know the answer to that. Shorter or longer books? LOL
You should check out Hoopla or Overdrive if you are interested.
I love listening to audiobooks & I love always having one with me. I have a bluetooth speaker in my shower. I listen to my book when I am showering, getting ready, cleaning, cooking & in the car.
I always have my next one downloaded.

The real answer is there 100's free from the Library.

The answer is pretty simple. The one-disc audiobooks are recorded in MP3 (a compressed format) while the multi-CD audiobooks are recorded without compression. An audio-only MP3 CD can have about five hours (or more) of playback time versus the 80 minutes of an uncompressed CD.

I use to rip my multiple disc CDs to MP3 files and burn them onto 1 CD. That way I didn't have to change discs while driving. I did Home Care before I retired and drove around 100 miles a day. I had lots of time to listen to audio books in between clients.

If you have an audio jack outlet in your car you can just download audiobooks (preferably free from the library) to an ipod, mp3 player or phone then just listen by using a double audio jack from your device to the car outlet.
I prefer using an mp3 because it is not internet connected and once I download an audiobook from the library I don't have to worry about it expiring - I can have as many books out from the library as I want and listen to them at my leisure.
