Anyone have cameras for security that they bought themselves. I know nothing about them, but am interested.
Are they easy to install. Neighbor had trouble with someone ringing door bell early in the morning. We live in a rural neighborhood with acre or more lots.
I am trying to help her make a decision. She is living alone and the police really were of no help.
We don't think she is in danger but someone is pranking her.

I have no answers, but am hoping someone does reply to help. This is a problem which DH and I and some other people have been experiencing as well. We cannot afford an expensive system and we don't know much about this type of thing either. So, we would appreciate suggestions, too. That is awful that people do this type of thing and think it is funny. Plus, you don't know when pranking stops and danger really starts.

Are they easy to install? Yes and no. The wireless systems are very easy to install, but need an electrical outlet nearby to power the camera. The hardwired systems are more complicated to install, but will often supply power to the camera through the AV cable which gives you more placement options. Ideally you'll want at least two cameras with overlapping views so someone doesn't just sneak up around a camera and disconnect/disable it. Something as simple as a piece of duct tape on a pole can render a single camera useless and all you'll see is the tape being put in place. With two cameras with overlapping views one camera should show the idiot putting the tape over the other camera.
The big challenge is what to do with the video. Many/most people use a home DVR for storage, but if your house is broken into the bad guys can simply find the DVR and take it with them. I believe there are now some cloud based storage solutions which might be ideal as long as your Internet access is up to the challenge. Sending large video files upstream might eat up your cap though if your access has a cap.

The fastest and easiest security cameras we have found are Trailcams. You can hide them anywhere on your property and they are easy to set up, affordable and they really do the trick! We have them a few places around our property and you would not believe the stuff we have captured on camera. Meter man checking out DH's shop etc. along with lots of wildlife pics. Set them up in the bushes by your doors and nobody get in or out with out a "selfie" your trusty Trailcam took!

@silkyk I have never heard of this type. They look easier to use. Walmart has a lot. What's a good one? I am not sure how it works. I know it has a sensor. Does the person know their picture is taken in the daytime? Are they hard to hide? thanks

Hi missy1, My trailcam (a present from DH!) is a Moultrie M880 Digital Game Camera. He said he did a lot of research before he purchased it for me .....I guess that means he looked for one even a tech challenged gal like me can figure out.
If you can computer you can set it up...or go to Walmart/good sporting goods store, and ask for a demo. EASY to hide because they are camo colored and tuck in bushes easy. Put it on a tripod or bungie cord it to just about anything. Nobody knows they are being "selfied" and you can even set for night vision. Pics or videos. I use it for security and for watching the critters on our property. Youtube also has tons of videos about them so look there too. I LOVE my trailcam! One of the best presents DH has ever come up with! Have fun with yours if you decide to purchase!
