Samsung 60 HZ or 120 HZ

I saw a Samsung 50 inch, 1080p, 60HZ for $798. What is the difference in 60 HZ and 120 and what is LED? My son has a 120 HZ and said it's better for watching sports, but I'm not into that. Will it have any affect on regular TV viewing?
