When I see laptops advertised with SSDs they are much smaller GB than regular HD, i.e. 128-256 GB SSD, while 500-750 GB is very common in regular HD.

Do the SSDs hold more, so that 128 GB SSD is equivalent to 500 GB HD in storage?

Thanks.

SSD don't hold more. The difference is a solid state drive doesn't have moving parts. A regular had drive has platters and an arm that reads the data. If you don't store much, a SSD dive should work.

Speed of an SSD vs HD,and SSHD

The SSD could be one drive. You could have a combo drive SSHD. A boot drive with a regular HD. The boot drive would hold Windows 10, and the HD your data.

The advantage of an SSD (solid state drive) is speed. They're blindingly fast. Most computer builders will load their operating system and frequently used programs on an SSD drive so the computer boots quickly and then use a standard HD for their large audio/video/data files where the speed isn't as important. An SSD drive can boot a computer from completely off to completely up and ready to go in thirty seconds or less.

In theory, SSD's should last forever as there are no moving parts, but early ones have had some issues with firmware and other issues. Intel SSD's are reportedly the most bullet-proof and fail-proof, but even those have an occasional clunker.

In terms of storage a GB is a GB whether it's on a SSD or a conventional HD. It costs more to buy a larger SSD so most computer builders only use SSD's for the operating system and frequently used programs and leave bulk data storage up to the conventional hard drives.

Thanks everyone, for your responses. I knew they were faster. Didn't know there were combos - that makes more sense, to just boot up Windows from it. Waiting another couple of months until I can buy Win 10 installed & some bugs are out.
