Router Repeater?

Hi. I have a wireless router in my home. I have a couple of spots in the house where there is very poor reception probably because of the distance from the router. Someone told me a repeater would fix this problem.

Is that the case? Can anyone tell me what the deal is with repeaters? Is it something I can just buy and plug into the wall? Does it have to have a special connections? I know nothing about it so any info would be greatly appreciated.
