You cannot get live American sports except through cable. (NBA NFL NCAA) You cannot get live news programs, but with an antenna, you can probably get a local news program.

Roku is fantastic if you are not into sports. We would save over $100.00 a month if DH was not into sports.

I bought one for DH at Amazon...but it was more than Costco. He's been enjoying it so far and has been exploring all the channels, etc.

ETA: He likes it so much that he's trying to figure out if we can get all of the channels that we like on cable then getting rid of our monthly cable bill which is close to $150.00!...of course if this does work out we would have to get more Rokus for the other TVs.

I would love to know if/when your DH figures out how to get the cable channels as well...dh used to be pretty up to date on how to do these things but technology has moved so fast and now he is a bit lost.

Is there a monthly fee? Can you get Bravo etc?

The beauty of Roku is they add new channels often. I rarely watched TV (cable) because there was never anything I was interested in. I have more shows/movies etc to watch now than I could watch in a lifetime! We don't watch sports or news, so we are missing nothing! There is no monthly fee missyw1. Only monthly fee is for some channels (Netflix, HuluPlus etc). Bravo is not available yet.

I have 3 Roku boxes but they aren't a substitute for satellite or cable. However, I still got rid of my Dish Network and now only have OTA antennae and I pay $7.99 a month for Netflix which I stream on the Roku. Netflix has a lot of recent TV shows that were on cable, but no, it's not cable and it's not intended to be.

I have a roku on every tv. I do still have cable because with the internet and tv package adding tv was a small amount. Anyway, I have playon running on my desktop with project free tv private channel and can get many shows on various cable channels. For those considering remember that roku does not stream live with the exception of very few tv stations. I have netflix and amazon video on demand too. On amazon I have bought movies and tv shows that I watch or shows that I wanted to have in my library. My mom loves her roku too.

I don't have a roku, rather an Apple TV. It's the same concept as the roku though. Don't think the Apple TV has as many channels available as the roku. However, I do get sports apps like ESPN, MLB, etc. I can watch ESPN channels live, but need to put in cable credentials at login. Same with HBO app, need cable credentials. So cable is not completely gone yet. Apple TV has the netflix app, and I watch a lot through that. The other thing I like about Apple TV is that I can use airplay with my iPhone or iPad to wireless stream anything from either of them. So although the Apple TV doesn't have the amazon app, I can bring up the amazon video app on my iPad and wirelessly stream video to the Apple TV from the iPad. So it doesn't matter if the Apple TV has the app or not. If I can view the video on iPad or iPhone, I can send it to the Apple TV and view it from the tv. Does the roku have wireless view feature?

I decided to get one of these for one of my TVs that doesn't have a Blu-ray player, or another streaming device. I read up about it for a while and it looks like a cool thing. It doesn't replace your cable. I still have all the channels on cable, but I like this sort of thing for Netflix or Amazon streaming. I guess people who do gaming like to use it for that too and this model seems to be the one to get.

I cannot even imagine how much QVC would cost for this, but the going rate for a new one seems to be in the $89 area, with free shipping.

Missy - there is no monthly fee for the streamer itself. But if you want to use stuff like Netflix you pay whatever they charge. For example, I have just the streaming acct with Netflix and that is $7.99 a month. You pay through Netflix and get yourself set up. I imagine others are the same type of deal.

Hi - can you please explain to me how this works? I have Comcast xfinity and I pay $150 a month plus extra for movies. I am not technically gifted, so I do not understand how this replaces cable. Thanks much!
