Replacing laptop hard drive...

My Dell laptop at work crashed. The tech said the hard drive is no good. They got me another computer, and now my boss wants to junk the old one. I'm going to ask my boss if I can have the bad one and try to replace the hard drive. How hard is that? Do I also have to reinstall Windows? Any help would be greatly appreciated. If it doesn't work, nothing lost. I think it'll be fun to try.
