Question on IPAD email set-up

Just bought IPAD Air and will be setting it up at Christmas, so was reading a manual on activation of email etc. I would like to keep my Verizon email address. Is this possible, and if so what info. will I need to do it? The instructions I read seem to imply that unless I use gmail or AOL, it is very tricky. I will be new to Apple/IPAD way of doing things, so if it is a big deal, I will just skip it and use my lap top for email. Thanks in advance for any advice , Susic.
