Question about wireless network?

I have a wireless network, but I turn it off when I get off the computer. So my question is when I'm connected am I supposed to see other people's names, that have their own network? Sometime I see several on there. Just wondering. When my wireless was set up it was set up secure. It's just that it bothers me everytime I see other people's name's.
