Question about upgrading to Windows 7

Quick question: I've figured out which version I need and I'm updating from Vista.

Will I need Vista's product key for the upgrade? I had to restore Vista several months ago and sytem keeps prompting me for the product key and I have to keep selecting to update the info later. Can't locate it anywhere. Laptop.

If I don't need anything from my vista system, I will go ahead and purchase Windows 7.
