Question about the iPad 4

I am thinking of buying one of these. I will go directly to the Apple store and buy it when I do. I am fortunate to have a full store close by.

That said - what is the main difference between the iPad 2, iPad 3 and the newest one? Is it the Retina display?

Also, is there much of a size difference? I am not talking about the Mini, but the full sized iPad. I ask because every single case that I see offered for it states that is made to fit the first 3 generations, but not the 4th. I was hoping to select a colorful case for use with the iPad.

Am I missing something? I don't see it offered on the Apple website to even pre-order. I looked last night.
