I know nothing about this technology if someone can answer my question:

So you buy Roku for $99, one time. Then you pay a monthly fee of around $10 for Netflix, another $10 monthly for Hulu, and another $10 monthly for Amazon?

Can you still get channels such as TCM, HGTV, Animal Planet, regular network news stations?

Please forgive my ignorance. {#emotions_dlg.blush}

You need cable to view the channels you listed.

No TCM, HGTV or Animal Planet. TCM has a free app that you can use on the tablet/pc. There are Roku local news apps. for a few cities. There are new apps often like a Warner Brothers movie app. that has a monthly fee. Hulu and Net Flix have a few classic movies but not many. Maybe Amazon has more. I too want to get away from cable..

Thanks nutmeg. Those are some of my favorite channels. They would be hard to give up.

We've had cable and/or satellite since the 80's and almost all stations I remember have/had commercials. There were a few movie channels that didn't. I think my parents had cable back in the 70's and we had commercials then too, albeit there are more and more all the time.

Didn't someone do a study on that and even in prime time isn't the ratio something like 3 mins of show to 1 min of commercials? And I think "cable" channel reruns are even worse, like 2 to 1! Obscene!

I am wondering, why do we pay so much to watch commercials? Our satellite TV is VERY expensive, even though we love it. We mostly record and watch later so we fast forward through a lot of commercials. Hubby can watch a football game in about an hour I think. I guess that's why we pay, so we can get all the channels, record them, and skip commercials!

I have a roku and have found you really only need one service ie netflix redbox or amazon. I have tried all three. We have amazon prime because we use the mailing service and ended up discontinuing the other two because of the similarities of the shows. I have not used hulu plus Type services because after not having cable for 15 years I really am not interested in what is on cable. We do use redbox kiosks occasionally for new movies but the service was very similar to amazon and we only get one or two movies per month that are new so we disconnected it. I would suggest you do the free trial of each together and see which one works best for you. Peace.

because these companies have the business in a stranglehold.

or by the b***s

and there is very little competition, and customers need the infrastructure to get the product
