Question about changing cell phone providers

Hi, I hope someone understands what I'm trying to find out & would appreciate any info or help on this.

If your 2 year contract is up and you change your service say from Verizon to Sprint, do you have to notify the company you were with after your number is ported over with the new service provider? In other words, do I have to call Verizon after the fact & say that I no longer wish to continue my service with them. Technically, they already know that once the number is ported that you are not using their service but I don't know if you have to actually call them (Verizon) and I need to find out if that's the case.
