Talking requires no data at all. Data is for connecting to the Internet. A few examples of what would require data are checking and sending email, watching TV or YouTube, watching Netflix, listening to music on Napster (online music service), etc.

 

That's why talk time and data time are separate. 

 

Also, when you can connect to Wi-Fi you can do all those things and use no data at all. Data is for when there is no wi-fi connection available.

@sipp, this thread is a bit dated now, so perhaps you no longer have questions, but...you mentioned connecting your phone to your car.  It isn't "data" you turn on for talking, but rather "Bluetooth".  That is what connects the phone to the car.
