Question: MESSAGES on my MacBook Air

My Mac Book Air is updated to:  11.1.  My question is about MESSAGES.

I have tried to figure out how to delete a specific conversation with out deleting all conversations with my contact.

Everytime I delete a conversation my contact is deleted as well as all conversations with that contact.  Can someone tell me what I am doing wrong?  thanks.

@Mom2Dogs

Delete a conversation

Note: You can’t recover a deleted conversation.

  1. In the Messages app on your Mac, select a conversation.

To search for contacts and content in conversations, click in the Search field in the top-left corner and enter what you’re looking for. Or choose from the suggested contacts, links, photos and more.

If you’re restricted to sending and receiinv messaags with only certain people, an hourglass icon appears next to those people you can’t send messages to.

  2. Do any of the following to delete a conversation:

    • Delete an empty conversation: Move the pointer over an empty conversation, then click the Close button .

    • Delete a conversation: Select a conversation, then choose File > Delete Conversation. Or if you have a trackpad or Magic Mouse, you can also swipe left with two fingers on the conversation in the sidebar, then click the Delete button .

If you use Messages in iCloud, deleting a conversation on your Mac deletes it from all your devices where Messages in iCloud is turned on.

To stop receiving messages from a business chat, delete the conversation.

Re: Question: MESSAGES on my MacBook Air

@Mz iMac   thanks, but when I delete a conversation, the  contact information also disappears...is that the way it's supposed to work?  I just want to get rid of older conversations, but everything gets trashed, not a specific conversation.

Re: Question: MESSAGES on my MacBook Air

@Mom2Dogs   When you delete convo the contact should not get deleted.  When you highlight the convo make sure the contact is NOT highlighted too.

It's the way it works for me.  I DO NOT use iCloud.  IF you use your Message app throught iCloud, it's possible deleting convos is different.  Again, check the other sources I listed.

Re: Question: MESSAGES on my MacBook Air

@Mz iMac ...Well it took FOREVER for me to delete  many conversations with one person in my contacts on MESSAGES.  I think it was 2 years worth.

I am not sure what I did the second time around vs the 1st time but I was able to delete all that I needed/wanted to delete and my contact was not deleted.

thanks!

Re: Question: MESSAGES on my MacBook Air

@Mom2Dogs  Thanks for the update.  More than likely this time around you did not "highlight" the contact along w/their convos.

2 yrs worth??? Good grief! Smiley Surprised faint.gif

I delete my convos as soon as I am done texting.  Anything important I "take a screenshot" place in a folder before I delete.

I've never thought about deleting any of my messages.  I've got all of them from the very first one.

You're not the only one.  Almost every dispute on Judge Judy ends up with the people involve showing text messages to prove their case.
