I always delete contacts and any saved files and do a factory reset before I shut it down and pack it away.
I lost my first phone in a taxi in DC a million years ago and it was PITA back then when you had contracts.
I've never lost a phone since, but I still keep it around just in case.
I donate the older one to the police department here for emergency service each time I buy a new phone.
It's why I always have at least 2 computers. My iMac recntly died, it took 3 weeks to get a new one and I cannot use my phone as my main computer. I've been in the middle of a room addition project and have ordered all of the things I've needed online. I wouldn't have been able to shop using a phone.

I wondered that myself. If you just take out the sim card is that enough to render the old cell phone safe??
