Problems with IE8 home page tabs

Well, here I am again looking for help with a problem that I have never experienced before. Hope I explain this correctly. On my old computer with Windows XP and using IE8, I have 2 home page tabs set up. The first one is set up with Google as my home page; the second one is used to go directly to my email sign-in page. These tabs have been set up this way for years with no problems whatsoever.

All of a sudden tonight, however, when I am on the home page of Google (from which I navigate to whatever website I wish to go), and click on the red "X" to exit the site I'm visiting, the email tab starts flashing and I am taken directly to the email sign-in page. It doesn't seem to matter what site I'm visiting (QVC, Walgreens, even Google itself). Instead of going back to the desktop when exiting from a site, I'm taken directly to the email page. I tried resetting the tabs, but am still having this problem. Also, when I'm taken to the email page, I get one one those "security warning" boxes asking "Do you want to view only the webpage content that was delivered securely?"

Would anyone have any suggestions please as to what else I can try to fix this problem besides, of course, just eliminating the second tab? Thanks so much.
