Printer Connection Problem

Ok, got my new printer all set up and ready to go. Put the disk for installing the printer on my laptop so I can print from my laptop wirelessly and it's not recognizing my printer!

Not sure what I'm doing wrong. The little box on my puter said it wasn't recognizing the printer and to hook or connect the printer to my router. Huh? My router is in the living room, my printer is in a bedroom. What are they talking about?

Tried to find my daughter but can't get a hold of her. Where are our kids when we need them! LOL

Any suggestions anyone?
