Portable Harddrive advice

Another shopping network is featuring a portable hard drive. They are saying if you buy a new computer you can transfer files, etc to the new system. It is Windows 7 compatible. What if you buy Windows 8? Does this mean the drive will not make the transfer? Anyone know.
