Please Help...Computer Virus

I am NOT computer literate at all. {#emotions_dlg.crying} My computer has been running slow, freezing up, getting pop-ups, and refusing to behave properly. I had it diagnosed by the Geek Squad and they said it has a virus even though I have anit-virus protection. This is the 2nd time this has happened. The last time, it cost me $130 to fix it. This time, it will be another $130 and more money to back up and clean my files. I am at a loss as to what to do because it seems like every few months this is happening and costing me $$$$$. They said that if I backed up my files (which I have absolutely no idea how to do)...mostly photos I don't want to lose and put them back into the clean computer, I may reinfect it as these files may be corrupt. I really am at a loss as to what to do and can't afford to keep shelling out large sums of money every few months. Does anyone have any suggestions?
