Paging Robomo: need more in depth advice on buying e-books please.

I have to confess, I'm pretty backwards when it comes to computers and electronics and if you could help me, I'd appreciate it.

I too, just purchased a Nook and I have a Sony and a Literati (it would be great but the battery life stinks). You spoke about buying books from any site using an "epub" format. I hate to sound ignorant, but I am. How do you get this "epub" format? For example, let's say I want to buy an e book from Amazon, can you give me specific steps I'd need to follow?
