I finally found the laptop from HP to replace the one I gave to my son.
I went to set it up this morning and it had no operating system on it!! It stated it did and then said to go online and put the Windows Software on a disc and load the disc in the new computer and set it up! It has a UPC code for you to scan to get to the next step and it would not scan.
Number one there is no disc drive in the one I bought! I never heard of a computer without a software installed. I ended up shutting in down and returned it to Walmart where I ordered it. It said also to put the Windows software on a usb drive also to do this if needed. The UPC code wouldn't even scan that came up on the screen!
I have set up laptops for years and I just can not understand what they are doing. Usually less than an hour and putting my info in would have all set.
Has anyone had a HP laptop with this problem?
I am done with HP as it was not a cheap laptop I bought or didn't seem to be preowned. I was glad I could return it locally at the store.

That what I love about Apple. I enter my Apple ID and tell it to set up from my cloud and it loads everything.

@MKR14 I know that is so frusting. And ridiculous. Why would they sell something like that. This is why I hate getting a new laptop. I'm not up to date with electronics like I was before I retired. I do have an HP laptop I purchased from HSN a few months ago. I'm still trying to get used to it! The software came with it and some of it was already installed. That's one reason I like purchasing these things from either HSN or QVC. But it's good you were able to return it. With the Back Friday sales still on maybe you can find another model you like from HSN or QVC. I think next time, I'm going to get a tablet. That's all I really need.

All my other electronics are Apple. I have two new iPads so I always have one charged.
I had an Apple Laptop a few weeks ago and had remorse because I felt guilty spending some money on myself. I am going to get a new Apple MacBook soon. My daughter has breast cancer and although I always make sure she has all she needs as she is divorced and her two children live away or they would help.
I have enough to buy one and I may just do that for myself. It is hard sometimes to stop and do things for ourselves. I have all my birthday money put aside and I think I know where it is going now.
Happy Holidays to all. 🎄

Walmart online. Luckily we have a Walmart in our city so it was easy to return.

My last laptop did not have a disk drive, but I seem to remember updating the OS on line. Or perhaps just registering?
Perhaps yours was outdated in some way? Good that you were able to return it.

I don't think that's normal to get a new laptop that doesn't have the OS installed on it. Something is definitely wrong there.

Hi SillieMee. I remember when we both bought the exercise chair if I am correct.
I never saw any laptop without any an operating system. Even Walmart knew it was to go back to claims so it did not get put back on the shelf for anyone else to get it.
I am on the hunt again. I just gave my HP 17" to my son as he does medical billing all over the East Coast for offices losing money. This way he has two laptop screens going when he is working. I miss him when he is gone so now he can work from home sometimes.
I hope everyone has a great Christmas and health to all of you and your family.

In decades of owning nothing but HP, I've never heard of anything like that. Just this past year, I bought new desktops this year, direct from HP.
Set up in minutes. No issues.
If what you said is true, it would have to be one that someone bought, messed with, removed the OS and returned. No way would HP sell any kind of computer without the OS installed as specified.
Are you sure it wasn't telling you how to create a recovery disk or USB?
Sorry, none of that makes sense. HP is the biggest-selling computer company in the world. They don't, in my experience, sell rubbish. I don'[t believe it came from HP that way.
