Nook Color question (battery life)

I actually left this question for the Q Tech Guy this morning, but no one has responded, so I thought I might have better luck tossing it out in the general Electronic Talk area:

I understand that my Nook Color has an 8 hour battery life. I have found that if I completely 'power down' when I am not using my Nook, the battery can last for weeks! Is there any reason that I should NOT do this? Could powering down actually shorten my overall battery life in the long run?

Now, lets see who comes to my rescue first!! lol
