New laptop or iPad?

If you were buying which would you buy and why? I've only had my Dell laptop 3 and 1/2 years - I already replaced the battery about 6 months ago. It's been acting up a bit and I have a feeling it's not long for this world. I love my laptop but is this generally how long they last? It just seems like too much money to pay for something that only lasts 3-4 years. And as much as I love my iPhone and iPods I'm not sure I want an iPad. And the Macbooks are twice as much as a laptop.
