New Camera Recommedations Needed

I am looking to purchase a new camera before I go on a trip in 2 months. I would like recommedations on good cameras.

I currently have a Olympus Camedia C-7000 zoom 7.1 megapixel. I had no issues with this camera until my last trip when I noticed others around me were able to zoom in closer to get better pictures. Also, I was not able to take good pictures inside a place in NYC. My pictures were dark even though the flash was on while someone else in my tour group had perfect pictures.

Someone told me that I would likely want to get a DSL(?) camera, is that true? I welcome any recommedations. I would like to get the camera in about a month, so I have time to practice before my trip.
