I have a Dell lap top. I can no longer receive emails and those I was receiving went into thwe unread file. I am older and don't know what to do. I called the cable co, and they told me to bring it in Monday. Is there a scam group going around? I received a phone call from a man who said there was a problem with my computer. He didn't give his name and I hung up on him. How can I get my emails back? Any help you can give will be appreciated very much. Thank you.

@Bobbi sue IMPORTANT (which you already apparently knew): There IS a scam where something goes wrong with your computer and you get a phone call from "Microsoft." If I remember correctly, the guy on the phone said he was from Microsoft and in order to "fix" our computer, we needed to give him remote access to our computer (yeah, RIGHT!) We just hung up and never heard back. Neither we, nor our techie friend, understood how this happened.
What email program do you use? (I use MS Outlook.) I have Cablevision (Optimum) and if I were unable to receive emails, I would call them and expect them to solve the problem. I'm sorry that this is as much help as I can give you.

This implies that the scammers know there's something wrong with your computer or have access to it, which is not the case. They're saying something is wrong when there is nothing wrong. They aren't following up on a virus they sent and they don't know anything about your computer, they're just trying to scare people into giving up personal information.

I think going to the cable company or going to a Best Buy Geek Squad type of service is your best bet. There are many, many things that could be happening and you did not give us enough information for us to troubleshoot for you. That's not your fault, but it means that you'll be better off getting help from someone in person, which is faster and easier than trying to get it fixed on a web forum.

My first thought is you got a virus from your e mail, take it to best buy, call first and make appointment with GEEK SQUAD.

We do not know what the problem might be. The Geek Squad can help.

Before you go running the Best Buy, update and run all of your security scans. That includes your antivirus, anti-malware and clear your browser's cache.
There is a chance you have some malware on your computer that you got through an e-mail attachment, something you clicked on while on the internet or downloaded.

I also got that phone call from microsoft when my computer had a problem loading the new virus program I was installing. I hung up on them. I knew it was a scam but, strange and creepy that they knew there was some sort of problem with my computer/internet .![]()

These are random calls. They just call until they get someone, and can run a scam on them.
