Need Help-Windows Internet Explorer Not Responding

I am not tech saavy (I'm sure you can tell) and have a recurring problem with my Asus netbook. Window Internet Not Responding, system freezes up and I have to close it down and re-start. It happens all the time and seems to be getting more frequent. I have Windows 7 Starter. I googled and found some websites with suggested fixes but I had to download the software and I'm leary of doing that. I posted this also on another post re: PCMatic. Can anyone help? Thanks, I so appreciate any input.
