Need Help Choosing Anti-Virus Protection

I just had my computer in the shop for a week due to a virus. I have been using AVG-Free anti-virus protection. I asked at the computer shop if I should change to AVG-Pay or Norton or McAfee. They said they just recommended AVG-Free because if a new virus comes out, the pay services don't catch it any faster than the free protection.

I've never had a computer virus before, so this concerns me. Obviously, people pay for the extra protection for a reason. What do you think, and what do you use? Thanks!
