My new PW was delivered Thursday, however I wasn't home until late so I opened it yesterday morning. I've only used it a few times for this review.
I didn't own any Paperwhites before this, so I can't compare models.
I was concerned of the lighting because I had read that last years model had shadows and rainbows on the screen. The lighting is totally even. Perfect actually.
I knew my other Kindles came already "set up" with my Amazon account. This didn't appear to be set up, but as soon as I started typing in my email it automatically turned on in my account.
I took it outside just for a minute to see how good I could see it and I could see it perfectly.
I love the size. It is just right for sliding in my bag.
The weight??? Well....I really thought it would be lighter than it is. Of course the case adds a little weight too. It does add noticeable weight to my bag. But it's still ok.
I loved how the pages turn. You barely (and I mean barely) touch the screen on the right side to turn the page forward. You touch on the left to turn back.
If you have to look something up, you don't lose your place.
On my Kindle HD, I used the black background because I thought it was easier to read. I was a little disappointed that this doesn't have black or sepia. However if you turn the light down, it looks about like sepia. I suppose these are easier on the eyes so you don't need the black background.
These also don't automatically change from portrait mode to landscape mode. You have to change it yourself which is easy. At first I thought it didn't change and I like to read in landscape mode. I wasn't going to be happy, but all is well.
The other thing that I'm sure I will get used to is that the book covers are in black and white. That bothers me a bit, but I'm sure I'll get used to it. I'll probably shop for books on my Kindle HD and then put them on my paperwhite. I like seeing color when shopping. Is that weird or am I the only one? It isn't really a negative as most of the time I won't need to see the covers.
One huge plus is that I don't lose my place. When I read on my Kindle HD, it seems I'm always losing my page when I try to change settings, look at the x-ray, etc.
I love how you can click on a characters name and it comes up who they are without losing your place.
I will look it over and use it more today. I'll report back if anything changes or if I notice anything else.
So far I love it.
Oh, I have not checked the lighting in the dark. I'll do that today. I guess I'll go into the closet and look it over. LOL
