My iMac was not responding and I couldn't get it to do anything.  I forced quit everything running and restarted the computer.  Well, it wouldn't turn on no matter what I tried to do.  I'm going to take it into the repair shop to see what is wrong but, I have a feeling it's dead and time to buy new.  Good thing I have a backup computer and a backup of my data.  As we post many times a year, never have only one copy of anything you can't afford to lose.  You never know when a computer or hard drive is going to die and take everything with it.

Good advice.  What year is it?  We have a mid-2011 iMac still running, though it doesn't get hard use.

All the PCs we've had in the past were toast in a year or two.  Apples to oranges, I know, but the Mac, to me, is worth it.

Good luck with it.

I've been thinking about buying a Macbook, but every time I look at them, I just get confused. Not sure what the main difference is between them all (Macbook, Air, Pro). The thing I hate about Apple is that they eventually just stop supporting the older versions and force you to upgrade. None of the software programs I use for work will work on  Mac, so the laptop would be just for personal use, I guess

I have a 2005 Toshiba laptop that I love and use for work. I wish I could find another new one with XP, as I hate Windows 10, but that isn't happening

@Quse  Here's a thought.  Write down exactly how you use your computer.  Then go into an Apple Retail Store (if there's one near you), or an Authorized Apple Reseller with that list and talk to someone there.  You'll get some ideas as to what you need.

As fo the software programs you use at work, there may be ways to get them to work on an Apple computer.  Again, make a list of the software and talk to one of the salespeople.

All of my Windows based computers lasted for years with very little going wrong. My iMac is over 6 years old and problably will need replacing.  I took it into the repair business to find out what's wrong, how much to repair and if it can't be repair for a reasonable price, to get the hard drive out.  My guess is it will be too costly to fix.

@Quse,   All companies eventually stop supporting older versions of all types of software, not just Apple.   No company can afford to continue supporting all older devices and all older software in perpetuity while still working on new products and services.   The last time I checked, Apple actually was offering support for old operating system software longer than Microsoft was, so Apple's track record actually has been better than other companies.   As far as deciding if an Apple device is a good fit, I agree with @Cats3000's post and also you can phone Apple's main phone number and chat with someone there.    They don't work on commission, they're based in the good old USA, and in my experience they're extremely helpful and knowledgeable.    At any rate, whatever you decide to purchase I hope you'll find it to be exactly what you need and want.😊

Niece has an imac since 2008 and it still is used heavily with no problems whatsoever.

Mine is working since 2011 and no problems either.

I have 4 Windows pc's and detest doing constant Window updates since they take up so much space on the hd, and in time they have so many issues and many have just dropped dead without warning.

(I always keep win up to date and do all the manual intervention to keep it running and yet my preference is Apple imac for a variety of reasons, and most important reason is my Apple Imac and Apple mac lap top computers just keep working for many years with minimal maintenance).

BTW I also love my Apple IPAD and no problems ever with that device either.

I need Win pc for work related apps but totally prefer Apple computers over all Windows pc's.
