My Verizon Experience

[ Edited ]

I have had a cell phone through Verizon for many years.  Last year, I purchased one on a special (bad idea) that did take really great pictures.  Bought a warranty, which I have never done before.  A month ago, the phone started overheating, would not hold a charge, could not get texts, and the camera stopped working.

I took the phone to the Verizon store and the clerk, who is very good, did something to it so that the battery stayed charged a little longer.  Nothing else changed.  I took it back and he told me that it was a warranty problem and I needed to call the warranty department.  He said I would have a new phone in 24 hours.

I called the warranty department and there was no answer.  However, I did receive a form in my email, filled it out, and got a claim number.  I thought that would be it and was waiting for my phone.

After 8 days, I called the number, got a real person who told me that they had no such claim number, that he could wipe my phone and I would lose info, or I could drive 40 miles and pay 2 tolls to the corporate center.  Neither worked for me.

I went to Verizon's contact page and found a local Solutions Manager.  Messaged him and never received a response.

Tried their social media page on FB, no response.

Did 2 online chats simultaneously, one telling me that I was at the head of the call line being number 12, when I clicked on a link and found two VP emails.

I emailed both VPs and within 30 minutes I had a contact, and within 24 hours I had a new phone.  Of course, when I went back to the store to ask them to transfer all of my info, it cost me $20.

The moral of the story is to just find an executive office email and contact them.  Replacing a phone under warranty should never be this difficult.

@SXMGirl

I'll stick with my cheap Tracfone, but it is seldom on. What a run around! I can only imagine how much time it took you to do this. Been on a few Catch-22's myself. Ain't fun.

Hope those that read this take heed!

@SXMGirl It shouldn't be so long and frustrating.  I almost decided to buy the insurance based on recommendation from someone who has had successful transactions with the Verizon branch.  That was just over 2 years ago thought -  no idea if your experience is common currently.  Hope you never have to find out in the future!

@hckynut  Like you, I rarely use my phone.  I need it to get into the Y, I text rather than call, but I mainly use it to take pictures for my art work.

I'm on the fence about switching from Tracfone to Verizon when my TF minutes are up.  I know I definitely need a new phone.

JMO, I would recommend an iPhone. Apple will introduce a new phone in October or November, and the prices may change on some current products.

Please read about why people buy an iPhone.

Verizon has a new prepaid wireless plan. I follow a YouTuber Stetson Doggett.

Please do not buy a budget phone from Verizon for $5 or 10 a month. VZW wiil expect you to buy an expensive plan for 24 months. The phone will only get quarterly security patches.

Apple phones will get patches when necessary.

I totally agree. they cost more up front but work for years. I have Verizion but have never bought theur service plan. I always buy Apple Care. Have used it before and worked wonderfully.

Back in the dark ages Verizon used to give you an SD Card with new phones.  Not sure when they stopped but I have been using one for years.  They say you can up load data and contacts but I don't trust them to keep it.  (former employee I know not to trust anything they say)

The card I have now is in my 4th phone and everything is saved to the card.    I would suggest going this route if your new phone supports it.  Especially if you are using it for pictures.  Or you can get a picture back up devise.  A couple of years ago I got one of those for my kids on QVC but don't recommend buying it from them.

Try Amazon or B&H Photo and video in Brooklyn.

An IPhone does not have an SD slot. So it can not  use an SD card.

LOL, years ago Verizon would give customers 2GB of cloud storage with any data plan.

Today, you can buy a separate data plan or you can receive one with a data plan.

I've nerer had an IPhone.  Not sure if I ever will.  Until then I'm sticking with my SD card as long as my phone will take it.
