Monitor on/off

The on/off button (not sure what you'd call it) but I can not turn monitor off even when I shut down my computer.

It was fine until this morning when I turned on my computer and at first I thought that the small green light did not come on so I pressed the "on/off button" again then it was on. However, later when I went to just turn off the monitor I was unable to do so. It does shut off when I shut down my computer but the little "yellow" light stays on.

I'm so used to pressing that button during the day to turn off my monitor when I'm not at the computer but now I can not do that. Any suggestions how to get this little button working again or is this a sign of a bigger problem? Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
