MacBook Air and live streaming

I AM NOT tech savy, so please bear with me.

I want to hook my old MacBook Air to my TV and stream via the MacBook.

 

Is all I need is a HDMI port on the laptop and the TV and the cord to connect the two?

 

If I do not have a HDMI port on the laptop is there an alternative?

If you search on line you can find solution using the Thunderbolt port, which all Macs have, the text was way to long to copy, but I found it with ease
