We've been very fortunate for the 10 years that Mac OSX has been available that we haven't encountered a widespread malware infestation. Those good times are over.
A trojan has been released that is infecting Macs. One of my friends downloaded it last night and I've spent a few minutes researching how to get rid of it. I was able to walk her through the process over the phone, so it's an easy fix.
Go to this web site - this guy is a regular contributor to the Apple sponsored support forums and has an excellent reputation - to learn more about how this trojan acts and how to get rid of it if you inadvertently download it.
Tip: If you use Safari, go to the Safari menu ---> Preferences ----> General. Make sure the "open 'safe' files after downloading" option is UNchecked.
I highly recommend that you install an anti virus program and keep the definitions updated on a daily basis. ClamXav and Sophos are free and will provide protection for your Mac. I have used ClamXav for years and will download Sophos this afternoon and report back.
