Losing emails from the Inbox in Gmail

This just started happening that I noticed. I have lost my second email from my Gmail inbox. My practice is to read an email and leave it in the inbox for further action until I no longer need it. I did not put the two missing ones in the Trash and they are not in the Trash now. What can I possibly be doing to cause this? My email reading is rather haphazard, sometimes I click on the body of the text and sometimes the title. Also, when returning to the Inbox page, sometimes I use the back button on the gmail and sometimes I use the back button on the browser. I've tried various combinations and can't force it. Could this be a virus and if so why doesn't it happen all the time? I have free AVG.
