Leaning towards a Apple Mini

Any thoughts pro / con ?

I just want to be able to upload pics via SD card

hook up a scanner and printer.

Want to say goodbye to Windows altogether and their deadly and costly updates.  My pc was ruined on Oct. 20th and after almost 300.00 I'm not taking that route again.

Is it fast ? I have a mbps of 50 at home.

Wifi, is out, I want ethernet hook up.

Thanks for any feedback. Think this will be 600 at least.

Re: Leaning towards a Apple Mini

I'm assuming you mean the mac mini and not the ipad mini. The basic mac mini is on the entry level/low level scale as far as ram, graphics cards and hard drive space. It depends what you plan on doing with it. It's fine for just surfing the internet and doing basic functions. The number one drawback is that it's very limited in upgrade ability.

I'm using a Mac Mini with El Capitan OSX 10.11.6. It does everything I need to do. I'm guessing if you are using it for business or other high demand work, you'd need something with more memory and speed.

Re: Leaning towards a Apple Mini

@SharkE I have an Apple Mini (the one QVC sold with the case that folds up.  I even got the soft case with it.  The keyboard is the second half of the case, making it totally protected.

I don't use it.  When I'm on here I use the Samsung (it's old but it works for me) laptop my daughter gave me.  I also have two other Apple tablets.  The oldest one is the one I bought when they first came out.  I managed to lock that one up (kept giving wrong secret word) and it locked me out.  Took my son-in-law a few days but he got into it.  Ha!

The other tablet is the light one (I think it's called Apple Air) I don't know.  The color is prettier than my old one, maybe it's a little lighter.

Sometimes I take the mini with me when I go to the Drs but I just use my phone most of the time.  I sit and read several magazines on my phone.  It's lighter and works better.

However, if you were thinking about using it instead of a laptop I can see where this one would work (the mini) as it is just smaller than this laptop I have.

Apple - Mac mini – Intel Core i5 (2.6GHz) – 8GB Memory – 1TB HardDr.

This is the higher end of the Mac mini. I don't game, sykpe, whatever, you call it.  I just want to search fast, send email and pics, download emoticons, gifs.  No office stuff.

I will hook up a scanner and printer to it upload pics from a digital camera

I have to get away from Windows once and for all.  I have a good friend who has one and adores it. She said to get away from Windows and their control games has taken a load off her shoulders. I want to be  in that club, too.

I thought maybe somebody here had one and could tell me if it was doggy or not.

Re: Leaning towards a Apple Mini

I had one but it was almost 10 years ago. I liked it ok, but it was limited for what I needed. Which is why I switched to an imac. But if it works for you great. The stuff you're talking about it's all about your internet connection speed anyway.

Re: Leaning towards a Apple Mini

I got a Tobshiba laptop that I bought 6 yrs ago and it's slower then the day is long and I'm still on 50mbps home network thru Suddenlink.

then I got the new Dell paid a fortune for it and Windows 10 destroyed it with their 10 updates. Still in the shop for the 4th time . Man, doesn't want to give me back the last 140 I paid 'em for not fixing it under their 30 day warranty. I know when I get it back it won't be fixed, so, I'll let them play with it for awhile then I'll pitch it when I get it back.

I called MS and told them they could pay my 270 bill they had a guy from India call me ............OK...............he thought he could fix it...and if he couldn't then they would turn me over, for a price, to one of their techs.

Nope, hung up on that deal.  So, me and MS are finished.

@jaxs mom

When you said the following:

The number one drawback is that it's very limited in upgrade ability.

isn't that a good thing? upgrades usually mean trouble like updates.

LOL

I'm referring to the hardware. It has a limited ability to be repaired or parts replaced if they fail.

Updates aren't trouble.

Re: Leaning towards a Apple Mini

@SharkE  I am with you !  Microsoft is awful.  My next computer will be a mac. Unfortunatly my computer is pretty new, so it will be awhile.  I do not understand why they put these programs on the market before they are ready.

I have a friend that had same issue as you, and she took her computer to Staples.  They were able to fix it and put it back to 7 BUT it cost her about 135.00.  The sad thing is the computer cost only 350.00 at a Sale last Christmas.
