Latest version of Adobe Flash Player

Many things I have tried to view lately tell me that I need that latest version of Flash Player. I have gone through the download process several times and have started the installation. When the installation gets about halfway through, I get a message that I need to close Internet Explorer in order to complete installation. I'm not sure how to do that. Can someone help? I have never had this happen before with any installations. TIA
