Wow interesting post/responses.
My Dell laptop is 11 years old - I love it. I have an LG Androit tablet that is about a half dozen years old - got it free with a phone purchase. The only time I use the tablet is when my internet goes out and when I travel. When my laptop goes I'll buy another one.

Please be very careful using an older Android tablet. It may no longer get Android upgrades or security patches.
An Android device may continue to run fine, but may not be, secure. Someone could steal your indenty.
A Google search will give you information about the security history of your device.

I have an iPad Pro and I have multiple word processing and productivity apps on it including MS Word, Excel, Pages...you name it. The apps I have do everything. Calendar, Directv, Prime Video, MyFitnessPal, Calculator, Camera, FACETIME, bank, every news and weather, crosswords, Scrabble, art, internet, email, watch QVC, order food, make calls to others with Apple devices anywhere in the world for free, music. text. You name it, it does it.
I bought one with a ton of storage and I also bought a protective case but it's tougher than you'd think.
I'm retired now but I have an HP laptop and I don't even use it. It's just sitting there. No more ridiculous Microsoft updates. No more juggling the thing on my lap or trying to get in a good position to use it.
I use my iPad Pro for everything and I love it. I bought one with tons of storage. I watch TV on it. Read books on it. With my iPad there's no need for a laptop.
If you have any extreme typing you can buy a Brydge keyboard for it. I have not bought one.

A 12.9 Pad Pro with the appropriate keyboard can handle most tasks. There is a question of how much do you want to pay.
@Nuttmeg @sandy53 the 12.9" is ungainly. The 10.5 or 11" is much easier to work with. Don't get less than 256 GB if you plan on using it for a long time.

Yes, an IPad Pro 12.9 is large fast and expensive. But it is a desktop replacement with a keyboard.
I have the Samsung S7 + 12.4 the Android twin to your IPad Pro.
It is fast, has OLED display, and can handle my emails. It can run MS Office software without a problem, and can cost a little more than $1K with a keyboard case.
Mindy,a person typing a great deal would need a wider tablet like a 12.9 device.
It would be a better value to buy a Macbook pro or Air.

We are a Chrome book family now. After getting rid of the laptops with the dreaded windows 8 and 10. We have pixel books now and we have several Samsung 10 inch tablets. We brought our daughter a Acer Tablet and she loves it. I had a apple device and so did my husband and we did not like them so we are a android and Chrome book family. O/P it depends on the needs of a person to decide what device works best. We use all our devices but, mostly the tablets because they are easier to bring with us.

@bargainsgirl , I am with @CalminHeart . I have a MacBook Pro and an iPad Pro. I would say, if you can afford it, do both. I do committee work on a volunteer basis and for that I need MacBook Pro. I need numbers, pages, etc. I use my iPad Pro most of the time. I live it's portability and when I travel I take that.
With respect to IPad Pro, I won't be buying the Pro next time. There is nothing I have done on the Pro that can't be done on a regular iPad imo. I will repeat what someone else said to me today...get one with loads of memory. My iPad Pro has 128 GB and it was almost full until I did a major cull of photos, apps, etc.
Finally, Apple products speak to Apple products with great ease. I would not add android at this stage of the game. So easy to share documents, photos, music, address books, etc.
Good luck in your choice! S aka Lilysmom
